Child Development – Curriculum Adventure

Curriculum Intent

The child care industry is a rewarding and exciting sector that many of our students choose to work in. The Child Development course we offer will help students to develop the qualities required to work in the child care and early years sector. This will include learning about milestones children reach at different ages and how they develop through play. We also study the principles of early years practice looking at how nurseries and playgroups implement inclusive practice and empower children.

The BTEC First Award in Children’s Play, Learning & Development is a two year course that consists of three units. Two of the units are coursework based, made up of seven assignments. Unit 1 is assessed by an end of unit exam that is marked externally. The content relates the qualification to work related contexts which can give students a good understanding of the ideas that underpin any future job that involves working with children.

The qualification enables learners to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop skills that are essential including; working to deadlines, presenting information effectively, problem solving skills, independent thinking and working as well as continuing to develop language, written and communication skills.

This course is an excellent gateway into college courses including diplomas, T Levels and foundation degrees. Apprenticeships are also available which offer on the job training with links to Derby College.
