Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG)


Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) plays an important role to help our students choose pathways that suit their interests, abilities and individual needs. It motivates them, promotes equality of opportunity and maximises their academic and personal achievements while at Da Vinci Academy and beyond. We are committed to providing a planned programme of careers education for all students in years 7-11. This programme will help them explore career options and to prepare them for the challenges and understanding of the world of work. We will support all students in making decisions about opportunities open to them. The Assistant Headteacher will manage and develop delivery to ensure the needs of all our students are being met.


The aim of our CEIAG programme is to help students develop the skills and confidence to make realistic and informed decisions about their futures and to manage the transitions from one stage of their education, training and work to the next. We aim to provide students with well-rounded experiences, develop characteristics e.g. social skills, communication, innovation, resilience and leadership and inspire and motivate students to develop their aspirations.

The programme has been developed in line with the eight Gatsby benchmarks for ensuring best practice and to meet the requirements of the Department for Education’s statutory guidance 2018. The Gatsby Benchmarks will be used as a framework for improving our careers provision at Da Vinci Academy. The eight Gatsby Benchmarks of Good Career Guidance:

  1. A stable careers programme
  2. Learning from career and labour market information
  3. Addressing the needs of each student
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
  5. Encounters with employers and employees
  6. Experience of work places
  7. Encounters with further and higher education
  8. Personal guidance


The objectives of the CEIAG programme at Da Vinci are to:

  • Ensure that students develop the skills and attitudes necessary for success in adult and working life
  • Make students aware of the range of opportunities which are realistically available to them in continued education and training at 14+ and 16+
  • Equip students with the necessary decision-making skills to manage those same transitions
  • Develop in students an awareness of the wide variety of education, training and careers opportunities both locally and nationally
  • Encourage students to make good use of the resources available to them, in order that they can make informed and appropriate choices throughout their school journey
  • Foster links between the school, local businesses and further/higher education establishments
  • Enable students to experience the world of work and develop transferable skills
  • Ensure that wherever possible, all young people leave the school to enter employment, further education or training
  • Maintain a culture of high aspirations
  • Promote equality of opportunity, celebrate diversity, challenge stereotypes and ensure all students who require any extra assistance and guidance to reach their potential, receive it

Legislation and Guidance

CEIAG at Da Vinci Academy is written in line with statutory guidance of the Education Act 2011 (updated September 2012), the DfE Careers Guidance and Inspiration in school statutory duties of April 2014, and Careers Guidance and access for education and training providers’ statutory guidance of January 2018.

CEIAG at Da Vinci Academy is also informed by:

  • The DfE Careers strategy: making the most of everyone’s skills and talents of December 2017
  • Advice from the Careers and Enterprise Company endorsed by the Careers Development Institute
  • The Gatsby Benchmark Toolkit
  • The D2N2 Employability Framework for January 2016

 DfE Careers Guidance and access for education and training providers of January 2018 references statutory duty of Section 42A of the Education Act 1997 which requires governing bodies to ensure that all registered students at the school are provided with independent careers guidance from Year 8 to Year 11.

 Careers guidance secured under the duty must:

  • Be presented in an impartial manner
  • Include information on the full range of post-16 education or training options, including Apprenticeships and technical education routed
  • Promote the best interests of those to whom it is given

 The Technical and Further Education Act of 2017 inserts section 42B into the Education Act 1997 and came into force in January 2018. This new law required each school to ensure that there is an opportunity for a range of education and training providers to access all students in Year 8 to Year 11 for the purpose informing them about approved technical education qualifications or apprenticeships. (See Appendix 1, which sets out how other educational and training providers can be given access to students.)


We offer very high-quality impartial information, careers education and guidance. To demonstrate the school’s ongoing commitment to our programme, we were awarded the Gold Careers Mark in 2015 and it was renewed in 2018.

Our provision is greatly enhanced through links with several partners who help ensure that students’ learning is up to date and relevant. We strive constantly to expand and improve links with employers and other local groups as well as working closely with the local authority in Derby.

Delivery and Content

Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance is taught within an integrated curriculum. We have a well-stocked and regularly updated careers library within our main library which is open to students at break, lunchtime and after school. Students can also view current career opportunities on the career’s information boards located around school.

Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance is provided through the tutor program in all year groups starting at year 7, tutor time assemblies, after school workshops, individual mock interviews, enterprise events, college partnership courses, college/university visits, employer presentations, posters, leaflets and through subject teachers within their own curriculum. We also host Y10 Work Experience week.

This program is reviewed every year to ensure the most up to date information and advice is given throughout the program.  Next review due in July 2019.

A key tool to help us with the careers program throughout all year groups is Unifrog.  Each student within school has a Unifrog login which enables them to start building a portfolio of skills for when they leave school.  It also has access to a database of over 1000 jobs and careers and information of different routes into those careers both through university or any other route. Any parent wishing to have access to Unifrog to help support their child’s career progression should email [email protected] and an account can be set up.

 All students receive at least one careers interview with a Careers Advisor at Key Stage 4. Careers advice is also available during Parents Evenings, Options Evenings and Open Evenings. Extra-curricular clubs, trips and inspiration days support students in developing their understanding of a range of subjects and helps students build their skills for work and life, whilst taking on new challenges.

Monitoring, review, evaluation and development of CEIAG

  • Our partnership activities are reviewed regularly which is reliant on funding from ‘Careers Local,’ the ‘Careers and Enterprise Company’ and ‘DANCOP’
  • Our provision is reviewed by the Senior Team and Assistant Headteacher who has the oversight of CEIAG
  • Lesson and tutor observations within PSHE/SMSC lessons as part of the Academy’s Self Evaluation
  • Developmental activity is identified annually in the SIP
  • Feedback on the effectiveness of the CEIAG programme is sought through student focus groups, school and parent council groups and questionnaires. Resulting action points then feed into the following years’ planning process to ensure they are addressed
  • Continual review of the Careers Mark

What next after Da Vinci?

Many students don’t know what they want to do after they leave Da Vinci, but don’t worry.  We offer support and help with this.  Form Tutors, Subject Teachers, are all there to help.  We run some useful events like our Post 16 pathways evening where we invite Sixth Forms, Colleges and Apprenticeship providers to come in and help. This is usually in our Autumn term and enables plenty of time before applications have to be submitted to meet providers.

At Da Vinci we don’t just want to think about the next steps in your careers, but your long-term career path. As part of this every student has the opportunity to visit a University at least once and many will visit a number of times over their course of time at Da Vinci. Wanting to find out more about university couldn’t be easier. Use the know how section of Unifrog to find out all about applying to university, what is needed in terms of student finance, what you might be entitled to if no one in your immediate family has been to university before and much, much more.

Encounters with Employers

One of the key things for students to experience whilst at school, is meeting people from the world of work.  We have a work experience program for Year 10’s giving them a week in industry.  For some students we will also support bespoke work experience packages to enable them to gain the best possible outcome for them when leaving Da Vinci. 

As part of our inspiration days we also have various employers coming into school to work with students.  If you have something you feel you can offer the school in regards of inspiration days whether that be year group workshops or small group work activities, we would love to hear from you – [email protected]

We also have a number of mentoring schemes currently being set up within different subjects.  We are always keen to encourage companies to work with us to help mentor students in their area of expertise.

Appendix 1

Provider Access Policy


This policy statement sets out the school arrangements for managing the access to providers to students at the school for the purpose of giving them information about the provider’s education or training offer. This complies with the school’s legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997.

Student Entitlement

 All students in Years 8 – 11 are entitled to:       

  • Find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point
  • Hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships – through events, assemblies, group discussions and taster events
  • Understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses

Premises and facilities

The school will provide suitable rooms and resources, as far as possible, as discussed and agreed in advance of the visit with the Headteacher.

Providers are welcome to leave a copy of their prospectus or other relevant course literature at the Careers Library which is managed by the administrator responsible. The Careers Library is available to all students at lunch time. Our school is happy to receive and distribute materials from providers.
